Spending Money Traveling

Much to the joy of many traveling buffs, a study conducted on the correlation between money and happiness by Thomas Gilovich. A psychology professor at Cornell University. He has revealed that experiences make people happier compared to material things. So, if you were planning to buy that brand new TV, don’t! Because spending that money on a weekend getaway to a place you’ve been dreaming about will most certainly make you happier.

This may come as a surprise to many of us who have been tuned by consumerism and the gazillion TV and internet ads. Chasing us to buy stuff that does not add anything concrete to our lives except taking up more space in our homes or pockets. According to Gilovich.

Traveling A Source of Happiness

One of our enemies of happiness is adaption. We buy things to make us happy, and we succeed, but only for a little while. New things are exciting to us at first, but then we adapt to them.

Think about it: Which had a greater impact on you – that video game you got as a kid, or the family vacation you took to Greece? The answer is pretty straightforward and given a chance to go back in time, you’re likely to choose that vacation again and relive all your experiences.

Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods. You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but nonetheless, they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are a part of you. We’re the sum total of our experiences.” said Gilovich in the study “A Wonderful Life: Experiential Consumption and the Pursuit of Happiness,” published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology.

Our experiences, especially when we leave our comfort zones and traveling to far off places with different cultures and social fabric, is what really defines us as a person and gives us a new perspective on life. These experiences leave long last memories and the time spent with loved ones. It makes you reminisce about the past for years to come. Compare this to spending on material things which lose their value very quickly and do not give us any long-term joy or happiness.

Gilovich continues, “One reason that experiential purchases tend to provide more enduring satisfaction is that they more readily, more broadly, and more deeply connect us to others.”

So, now that science is backing your traveling bug and allowing you to go out and spend that money you’ve been putting towards the latest iPhone, what’s stoping you? Book your ticket to Peru, sign up for a yoga class or visit the next Coachella. You’ll be much happier. – Ryan Daniels
